Menomonie High School Fined for Garbage Being Recycled
Green for Life Waste Company has fined Menomonie High School for putting incorrect waste in the recycling dumpster.
The issue Menomonie High School faces is the cross-contamination within the recycling bins. When people throw their garbage away, they often assume the item is recyclable, only to end up in the wrong place. The recycle bins are emptied into the recycling dumpster, assuming it’s all suitable for recycling.
The Green For Life (GFL) recycling guidelines state no windows, mirrors, ceramics, light bulbs, plastic bags, films, styrofoam, e-waste, TVs, computer items, car parts, or shredded paper. Some common items that are misrecycled are used Starbucks cups, milk cartons, and plastic bags.
The cause of the problem also comes from the community. Garbage like chairs and greasy pizza boxes have been found in the recycling dumpster. We are not sure where it’s been coming from, so we can only assume. Cameras are currently underway to be installed on the dumpsters to see who and what exactly goes into the dumpsters.
The GFL fines us $100 per dumpster. This could take a serious hit on MHS’s finances when added up. $100 for 2 dumpsters per week. This is $200 a week for 4 weeks a month, making it $800 a month and $9600 a year.
