Sewing machines were working in overdrive these last few days as students prepared to head out on a mission to help children and families in El Salvador.  Sixty-one dresses and 14 pairs of shorts were constructed by members of McCracken FCCLA and the Sewing Club.  Fabric donations poured in from several different states after a request was put out through social media.  To date, FCCLA has contributed over 200 handmade dresses to the El Salvador student mission group.

By supplying the basic need of clothing students can make a huge impact in the life of a child.  Not meeting basic physical needs can affect a child’s development. One simple dress has the ability to provide so much for a young girl who is living in poverty. In many cases, this is the first piece of clothing that the child will personally own, not having been passed down from others within the orphanage or family. This garment can provide confidence and joy. The hope is that by having a handmade piece of clothing, these children will remember that someone in the world loves them enough to put time and effort into handcrafting an item just for them. The mission team hopes that these children will remember the impact that these little gestures have on their lives and in turn spread that same love to others.   Strengthening families, careers, and communities are major goals in the FCCLA program.  Local chapter members chose “Dress A Child” for a community service project.  To be a part of FCCLA, please talk to a chapter member or any FCS teacher.
