Starting something new, Bennett Schmitt and Ellie Beck decided to bring something from Schmitt’s previous school, name the school, introducing MHS to new experiences: Model UN
Model UN or MUN is an international social project designed to create future leaders and simulate how the real UN works. In April 1947, the first Model UN conference was held at Swarthmore College with all members invited, a total of 150. Now in 2025, there are over 400,000 students in the program.
As this is the first year at MHS, they are not competing with other schools. This year is known as a building year; the effect that it has is not diminished though. The club is meant to improve on writing and argumentative and public speaking skills, according to Beck. As this is building year there will be internal meets, meaning that they will make teams and simulate what a competition could look like just within the club.
The teacher in charge of the club is Ms Tempus, currently leading the creative writing club; she along with the student leaders are excited for upcoming meetings with one being this Friday, 10/31/2025 at study hall.
In the coming years they want to see the club grow and become a staple of MHS.
“I hope to see it get adopted so that hopefully it will begin to be viewed as big as Science Olympiad or Forensics,” said Schmitt.
All three of the leaders said the same thing in interviews. This will be a great place to practice great life speaking skills in an easy and low stress environment especially this year with only internal meets held.
