The need – Women and girls in third-world countries rarely have reliable access to menstrual products and education. This leads to young girls missing school often because they don’t know how to take care of themselves while they are on their periods. It also leads to teen pregnancy being more common because these women and girls do not know how that part of their bodies works. The Pink Box Purpose is a non-profit organization run by women in Honduras who make reusable pads to distribute to women in these countries, as well as providing information and education to these people. This allows younger girls to attend school even while on their periods, for older women to miss less work, and for all women to be educated about their bodies. Being educated about these things also boosts confidence and helps girls understand themselves and their capabilities so they can go on to do great things.
What it is – The first thing that came to mind when brainstorming was helping provide menstrual products and knowledge. As women in America, we know how fortunate we are to have products available to us. But we know this is not the case around the world. Even with our access to products, these products are very expensive and are not counted as a “necessary medical item,” although periods are normal and happen for more than half of the population. We decided to create a trivia event as a way to increase awareness and share knowledge about this problem. Our trivia night will be held on November 12th at 6 pm in the lecture hall at the high school. We hope that everyone who attends will not only have a fun experience, but will also learn something about this organization, this issue that is faced by thousands across the globe, and a way they can help. All the money raised by entrance fees and donations will be donated to the Pink Box Purpose so they can continue their good work and help even more people.
