The Menomonie Mustangs’ Boys Hockey team hosted the Chippewa Falls Cardinals for Senior Night, January 8th, 2026. The varsity match started at the Fanetti Community Center at 7 PM and honored the 5 Senior Mustangs’ on the team: Davin Ellis, Bryekin Leach, Wren Swanepoel, Brock Wilkens, and Ryan Xu.
In the first period, the Cardinals struck first, with #2 Zachary Black scoring at 12:38, assisted by #8 Jackson Williams. Throughout the period, the Mustangs and Cardinals both had 8 shots. Following the end of the intense first period, the Mustangs fell short, with the Cardinals leading 1-0.
The Mustangs struck back in the second period with Davin Ellis having a shutout and the Mustangs scoring 2 goals. Throughout the period, the Mustangs had 6 shots, and the Cardinals had 12. The first goal of the second period was scored by #22 Blane Anderson and assisted by #21 Kellen Turner at the 4:17 mark. The Mustangs’ second goal was scored by #6 Brekkin Cody and assisted by #9 Ryan Xu and #5 Jaxon Giertz at the 4:48 mark.
In the third period, the Mustangs struck first, with #5 Jaxon Giertz scoring unassisted, bringing the score to 3-1. Later in the period, the Cardinals struck back with a goal of their own, scored by #2 Zachary Black and assisted by #5 Andrew Herbert, bringing the score to 3-2. As the match continued, the Mustangs fought strong and kept their lead, tallying the final score to 3-2, with a Mustang’s victory. In the third period, the Mustangs had 6 shots and the Cardinals had 12 shots. The final number of shots from the Mustangs was 20 compared to the Cardinals 32.
“The night was really special, as it was the only time in my high school career that we’ve beaten Chippewa,” said captain Ryan Xu. “The fact that it was senior night made it even better.”
