The movie The Housemaid was released in theaters on December 19th, 2025. The film is based on the book The Housemaid by Freida McFadden, which is about Millie Calloway, an ex-con desperate for work, who becomes a live-in maid for the seemingly perfect Winchester family. Only to discover dark secrets, strange rules, and a volatile relationship between the husband, Andrew, and the wife, Nina, puts Millie in danger, forcing her to confront her own past and the family’s hidden secrets.
Many fans of Freda McFadden were excited for the adaptation, especially since it’s one of McFadden’s best sellers. Fans were also very thrilled with the main cast being Amanda Syfried and Sydney Sweeney, both of whom are known for numerous incredible acting roles.
There were some differences between the book and the movie. In the book, Nina and Andrew’s daughter Cece was younger than she is in the movie. They showed a part from the book where Cece wanted a snack, and Millie made her a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. However, Cece is allergic to peanut butter, and that part was not shown in the movie at all.
Many fans were thrilled with the movie because it matched the book pretty spot on; however, it does miss some key points from the book. The movie could have put in some of the parts that were in the book, like Cece’s peanut allergy, or her age, since they made her a little bit older in the movie instead of her original age.
I think the movie was great; it showed a lot of emotion between the characters and how they were extremely precise, like they were in the book. Nina’s character was accurate; her split personality, which is shown for half the movie and in the book, was pretty much an exact match. I would recommend reading the book, then watching the movie. For those who want to watch the movie before reading the book, you will most likely love it, but if you go back and read the book, you will see some minor and major parts that were changed in the movie.
